the Year of Goethe was being celebrated in the Soviet Union.
The translator of Faust and his readers were familiar with, inter alia,
Goethe's ballad -The God and the Dancing-Girl
and recognised the allusion to Ivinskaya
Heed your priests as you twirl
No spouse of yours was he
You are a dancing girl
Hence you live quite free
But the body draws its shadow
Into the silent realm of death
With the husband goes the widow
Duty and fame in the same breath
